Mathematics

At Bugle School, we use a mastery approach to mathematics in order to help children achieve the 3 aims of the National Curriculum:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and
frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop
conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and
    accurately.
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevere in seeking solutions

At Bugle School, we use a mastery approach to deliver the teaching and learning of mathematics which supports our pupils in becoming fluent mathematicians who can reason and problem solve in a variety of situations.  We want our pupils to have a love of maths with links being made to other academic subjects (such as Science and Design Technology) and the real world.  As our pupils move throughout the school, we aim for them to develop a continuous, deepening understanding of all areas of mathematics; building on their knowledge year, upon year in order to prepare them for their next stage of education as well as their roles in wider society.  Throughout their mathematical education, pupils will be supported using a range of concrete materials and images before moving on to abstract mathematical concepts; being encouraged to become independent mathematicians who can make links between these steps and the different areas of mathematics.

To support the children’s fluency and speedy mental calculations and times tables recall, we start every lesson with a dedicated times table teaching slot. The children use chanting and a counting stick to recall their tables facts. They then use a times table test book to recall different multiplication and division facts from that specific table. We also use the online platforms of Numbots and Times Tables Rockstars.  These allow the children to compete against each other within the school and with other children nationally.  We also have afternoon arithmetic lessons (3 times a week), which allows the children to develop and extend their calculation learning.

We follow the White Rose scheme of learning and to implement this, we follow their addition and subtraction, multiplication and division policies, which you can find attached below.
